Dimitrios Mouchlias had 13 kills and Chaz Galloway added 11 kills and eight digs as the top-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team held off UC San Diego in four sets on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. in Honolulu.
Despite hitting just .275 for the game — their third-lowest hitting percentage of the entire season — the Rainbow Warriors edged the Tritons 28-26, 25-17, 19-25, 25-14 .
Mouchlias, Spyros Chakas and Cole Hogland each had two of UH’s eight service aces against just nine errors. Jakob Thelle had 39 assists, six blocks and an ace for Hawaii, which improved to 8-1 in Big West Conference play and 25-2 overall.
After rallying to take a tight first set and running away in the second, the Warriors hit just .038 in the third. They rebounded early in the fourth set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead that only grew from there.
Ryan Ka led the Tritons (8-15, 2-7 Big West) with 20 kills.
The teams will play again tonight as UH celebrates senior night.
