As the NHL playoffs begin, the NY Jets are the only New York named big-four sports team that missed the playoffs in 2022-23.
The distinction of not making the playoffs in 2022-23 belongs to the New York Jets alone among all NY sports teams
The New York Jets already own a formidable big-four sports streak. They officially have the longest active playoff drought at 12 years.
While they hope to end that funk, however, there is another negative difference they cannot avoid.
In the New York-New Jersey area, there are nine traditional metropolitan sports teams—the Jets, Giants, Mets, Yankees, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, and Devils. Argue all you want for NYC FC, but they didn’t make the cut.
Of those teams, the Jets are only one that will miss the playoffs in the 2022-23 season.
There are ebbs and flows in New York sports, especially with the deterioration of the Jets and Giants over the last decade. Rangers are back on track after a mini down phase. The Yankees are the Yankees, but last year was the Mets’ first playoff appearance since 2016. The Devils and Islanders have changed hands. The Nets are from a superteam different back to the ground. The Knicks are the Knicks.
However, even the lowly Knicks did something the Jets couldn’t. They will compete in the postseason at the end of the 2022 season. The Jets, meanwhile, stumbled their way to a 7-10 record with a six-game losing streak that ended the season.
Woody Johnson is fed up and has given an ultimatum to the playoffs this season, whether he accepts it or not. His cold feet on the possibility of Aaron Rodgers retiring after 2023 didn’t diminish his laser focus on getting his man. Johnson’s only holdup is the amount of premium draft capital in the deal.
The 2022 season is a lost one. Can 2023 break the playoff-less streak? Getting Rodgers in the building is a good start for Gang Green.
