LOS ANGELES – Now streaming on Roku is “Slip,” created, written and directed by Zoe Lister-Jones.
The series follows Mae (Lister-Jones), who is in love with her husband, but there is little romance in their relationship.
When Mae “slips up” and has a one-night stand with a guy she meets at a bar, she wakes up the next morning to realize she’s entered a parallel universe where she and her one night stand married – marks the beginning of his journey through the parallel universe.
Mae must continue to slip in and out of other realities and relationships to find her way back to her husband and, ultimately, to herself.
“Women have a sexual awakening later in life, and I don’t think it’s talked about enough,” Lister-Jones said. “When women give themselves permission, or are given permission, to really experience sexual pleasure, it is very encouraging. I want to put that power on the screen.
Lister-Jones told Spectrum News that she wanted to explore the topic of sex in a way that felt unapologetic and encouraged women to be agents of their own sexual desire.
The themes explored in “Slip” are universal, even in a relationship.
“I hope people feel seen,” Lister-Jones said. “I hope the show resonates and people get on board and feel restored.”
Lister-Jones said he loves directing, and it allows him to shape other shows along with himself — an opportunity few people get to experience, he said.
Emily Hampshire as “Sandy” in “Slip” on Roku.
“Slip” also stars Emily Hampshire (Stevie Budd of “Schitt’s Creek”). In “Slip,” Hampshire plays Lister-Jones’ wife in a universe.
“He’s amazing. He is a very good actor, but there are many sorrows. We really enjoyed building that relationship. He was just a dream,” Lister-Jones said.
“Zoe’s scripts are amazing. When I got them, I missed them. It’s so well written, so relatable. I think we all wonder what it would be like, what it would be like if we were on a different path,” Hampshire said.
“Slip,” says Hampshire, is a woman’s perspective, a journey that is smart and precise about how a woman’s vagina is a portal.
“I really admire Zoe. He is a unicorn. I always asked her to marry me,” he said.
Like most of us, Lister-Jones said that in real life, if he was transported to another life, another parallel universe, he would want to retire on a beach.
“Slip” is now streaming for free on Roku, and seven new episodes of the second season have already been written.
