The Wolverines came to Coudersport on a mission.
Unfortunately, the Falcons played spoiler, defeating the Sheffield boys and girls track teams. The Sheffield men fell 80-69, giving up eight points from the start because they had to miss the pole vault, while the women fell 81-58.
“I think we’re focused,” said Sheffield head coach Jason Snell after the disappointing loss. “I thought I gave a great speech after we got off the bus about how small Sheffield is without these opportunities around the corner. We have to make the most of this opportunity.”
Lucas McNeal was the standout for the Wolverines on the men’s side, sweeping the jumping events. McNeal marked a 19-foot, 4-inch long jump, 37-1 triple jump, and 5-8 high jump. Connor Finch followed McNeal in the triple jump with a 34-1 jump.
“Lucas worked, and he smiled,” said Snell. “He struggled with that injury, but again, he’s the anchor of the four-by-one, which still hasn’t gone away this year. Every day he comes to work, and he has a hole in his butt. Just another day at the office for him.”
Freshman Damar Seymour paced the boys in track, winning the 100-meter (11.6 seconds) and 200-meter (24.0 seconds). In doing so, Seymour qualified for Districts. Leihden Wotorson and Jaylen Dougherty (11.9 seconds) tied behind Seymour in the 100-meter. Sheffield took two of the three relays, the 400-meter (47.9 seconds) and the 1600-meter (4:01.8 seconds).
Emily Foster continued her good week, winning the long jump (4-10). The only other women’s winners were Madison Connolly in the 3,200 meters (20:15.9), Lily Benton in the 110-meter hurdles (19.6 seconds) and Emma Roell in the 100-meter (13.9 seconds).
“To see the points and how well we’ve done, I mean Coudersport has been chasing us for years,” said Snell. “To be close to each other. I know we have the best team coming up in God knows how long. That was our chance today. It breaks all of our hearts. It was a quiet bus ride home. There was a lot of heartache.”
Sheffield will travel to Fort LeBoeuf for an Invitational on Saturday.
