“Today, we’re updating Bard with the ability to help people with programming and software tasks, including creating code, debugging code, and explaining,” wrote Paige Bailey, a product manager at Google Research in a blog post.
Google says it has updated Bard with the ability to help professionals with programming and software-related tasks including, code generation, explanation, and debugging. The company in its official blog post said that since the launch of the chatbot, coding has been one of the top requests received from users.
Programming and software development tasks and capabilities are offered in over 20 programming languages including Go, C++, Java, Python, JavaScript and Typescript. Additionally, users can now export Python code to Google Colab easily. Besides, Bard can also help users with writing functions for Google Sheets.
Google says that apart from generating code, its chatbot can also explain snippets of code. According to the company, this feature is helpful for those learning about programming for the first time or for those who need additional support to understand the output of a particular block of code.
Interestingly, Bard is able to debug the code and even the code written in it. “If Bard gives you an error message or code that doesn’t do what you want, just tell Bard “this code isn’t working, please fix it,” and Bard will help you debug,” read the post on the blog.
While this is the latest addition to Bard’s capabilities, Google has stated that the chatbot is still an early experiment and that it is capable of generating code that may not work. Regardless, Google is optimistic and foresees that Bard will be used as an important tool for developers and creators.
