NEW DELHI: Delhi University’s expected technology faculty is likely to start taking students from the upcoming academic session as approvals are in now, senior university officials said.
In December 2021, onThe statutory body cleared the establishment of three engineering courses – BTech in computer science, electronics and communication, and electrical engineering. However, due to pending approval of manpower, funding and other aspects, the university has not been able to launch the programs.
Speaking to TOI, vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh states that the central government has approval for teaching and non-teaching posts.
“The government has approved the posts sought by the university. About 72 teaching posts and 48 non-teaching posts have been sanctioned by the Centre. Admissions to the three programs will start from the upcoming academic session because all the necessary approvals, including those from the University Grants Commission, are in place now,” Singh said.
Singh added that such sanctions on the posts came after almost two decades.
Admission to the three programs will be based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains.
“There are about 120 students per branch of engineering, divided into two sections. While the land for the construction of the new building for technology teachers has been completed, the construction has not yet started. classes can be held and then in a couple of years, it will be shifted to the new building in the North Campus itself,” Singh said.
A senior university official added, “The university is in the process of introducing many new programs and centers but the faculty of technology is a priority. financial assistance from HEFA (Higher Education Funding Agency) and optimistic that many things will happen in May. The target set for the completion of the new building is two years.”
The university is also planning to establish a new medical college besides several other programs such as a five-year LLB program.
DU registrar Vikas Gupta said, “While the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute is already there, we are exploring the possibility of opening a new medical college under DU. It is at a nascent stage. In initially, discussions should be held with the Center and especially the ministry of health.”
While the report for the five-year LLB program is likely to be submitted to the university next week, Singh said the varsity will set up law campuses in Surajmal Vihar and Dwarka in future.
