(CNN) At least two people were killed and four were wounded when shots were fired into a crowd gathered at a park in Louisville, Kentucky, Saturday, authorities said.
Officers responded to Chickasaw Park around 9 p.m. and found several people shot, including two who were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.
Four people who were found injured were rushed to a local hospital, including one who was in surgery and in critical condition, Louisville Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey said at a news conference Saturday night. . No further details were available about the victims.
“Hundreds of people were in the park at the time of the shooting when someone started shooting into the crowd, hitting at least six people,” Humphrey said.
It was unclear who fired the shots. According to the police, they have yet to identify who is responsible or determine the motive behind the incident.
“I want to talk directly to whoever did the shooting,” Humphrey said during the news conference. “Give yourself up. The best thing for you to do is to give yourself up. We know this isn’t going to end well. The best case scenario is that you just give yourself up and stop it.”
The incident marks the second mass shooting in the city in less than a week. It comes just days after a gunman killed five people and injured several others Monday at the Old National Bank in Louisville — about 5 miles from Chickasaw Park.
“This has been an unspeakable week of tragedy for our city,” Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said during a news conference. “On Monday, we lost five of our fellow citizens in a horrific act of gun violence in the workplace. And now, five days later, we are at the scene of another reckless act of gun violence.”
Greenberg said doctors and nurses once again found themselves rushing to save the lives of victims of gun violence Saturday night.
“This is not our city. This is not who we are. This is not who we want to be,” the mayor said.
As authorities investigate the scene of the Chickasaw Park shooting, Donna Purvis, a Louisville Metro Council member who represents an area that includes the park, expressed her dismay at the ongoing violence in the city.
“I’m so tired of this and I don’t understand it,” Purvis said as police lights flashed behind him. “Now, I’m at a loss for words.”
