HONOLULU (AP) – Hawaii’s second-largest volcano has not erupted, scientists said in an update to a previous warning.
The US Geological Survey said in a statement late Saturday that seismic activity beneath Kilauea’s summit “has returned to background levels, ground deformation has stabilized, and no lava has been seen above. “
The statement warned that “another incursion or continuation may occur in the near future with little or no warning.”
The agency previously said a shallow earthquake signaled “resumption of eruptive activity at the Kilauea summit is likely imminent.”
Scientists said Tuesday that the lava stopped flowing after 61 days of volcanic activity.
Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupted from September 2021 until last December. A 2018 eruption of Kilauea destroyed more than 700 homes.
For about two weeks last December, Hawaii’s largest volcano, Mauna Loaalso erupted on the Big Island of Hawaii.
The double eruption of Hawaii’s largest volcanoes provided a temporary boost in tourism during the slow season.
Volcanic eruptions have deep spiritual and cultural significance for Native Hawaiians. When Mauna Loa began erupting in November after being dormant for 38 years, many Hawaiians participated in cultural traditions such as singing, chanting and dancing to honor Pele, the god of volcanoes and fire. , and left offerings known as “hookupu.”
