Five people were shot at a Mardi Gras parade Sunday night and one was killed, New Orleans police said. One person was detained at the scene of the shooting.
According to the police, it happened on the route of the Krewe of Bacchus parade.
They said officers patrolling the parade heard gunshots and found five victims when they arrived at the scene – three men and two women. A young man, said the police.
They were taken to the hospital and one of the male victims was pronounced dead.
Others are said to be in stable condition.
NOPD Chief Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier told CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV that officers were “quickly able to apprehend the suspect we believe is responsible for this” and that two guns were recovered.
“It’s definitely not something we want to see,” Ganthier said. “We really want this to be a safe Mardi Gras.”
The parade was temporarily halted but was allowed to continue, WWL reported.
An eyewitness told WWL that there were at least a dozen shots and people fell over themselves trying to get away, abandoning everything they had.
The eyewitness said there were several scuffles broken up by officers before the shooting at the scene of the shooting.
