Kevin teamed up with fellow Mexico-based correspondent Mary Beth Sheridan to produce a powerful run of eye-openers, including “Losing Control,” the five-part series about Mexico’s award-winning security debacle. of the 2020 Overseas Press Club’s Bob Considine award for the best translation of international affairs. Last year, their bold reporting on Mexico’s role in the drug trade was the focus of “Cartel Rx,” a seven-part cross-departmental series on the failure of the United States and Mexico to combat the scourge of fentanyl. Individually, he has also done extraordinary work, such as his immersive reporting, in text and audio, on painful family separations in the Trump era and the absurdist world of Mexican bounty hunters competing to track down fugitives in the US.
Kevin, with his reporting from Afghanistan, Africa and Mexico, has demonstrated exceptional versatility, tenacity and initiative. A marathoner, he spent two grueling days running alongside one of Mexico’s greatest athletes, Germán Silva, as the two-time New York City Marathon champion ran the length of his country. to show its beauty and diversity. Kevin earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and comparative literature from Brown University and a long-delayed master’s degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He speaks Spanish and is learning French.
In his new role, Kevin will be part of the team led by Peter Finn, the senior editor for international investigations. Peter and Kevin will coordinate with Joe Tone and other Sports editors as we expand the scope and ambition of our investigative efforts. Kevin will remain in Mexico until the end of 2023 before moving to a new international location.
