Johnny Russell hopes MLS represents his retirement dwelling, but six years and counting of brushing shoulders with Lionel Messi will have been no easy payday.
For of us that sustain easiest a cursory idea on Major League Soccer, football’s prime division within the United States is easily characterised as a place ageing stars dash for one final payday, a league where the overall quality of play is of a low satisfactory level that the game’s creaking greats can coast thru the final years of their career. Retirement’s waiting room.
It’s far a notion hardly dispelled by Lionel Messi’s success with Inter Miami, with the greatest ageing great of them all accumulating the payday to total all paydays.
Then again it is, for certain, a thought ardent MLS observers would outright reject. Anyone watching intently can idea how, over the past decade or so, the extent of play and tactical notion internal the league has improved manifold, whereas the general age profile of its most productive players has reduced.
Leading this hypothetical horde of chest-beating MLS guardians stands Johnny Russell, Carrying Kansas City’s Scottish captain.
“Maybe in years past, ageing European stars went over there and it was considered as a last payday for them,” he tells Football365. “But I may idea the league was changing. That’s why I made the determination to dash there once I was 27. I may idea that they were looking for to obtain youthful players.
“Inch, there have been peaceful some older stars who would dash. But I may idea the pattern of the league changing. And you can idea it now, since the time I came in 2018, the way teams are going after younger players, especially younger South American players, and promoting them on.
“The league has grown every year since I’ve been right here. Teams are going after youthful talent. Teams are improving every year. They’re constantly changing ideas within the league to give room for thrilling talent to approach back in. Europe is always going to be what of us idea as the pinnacle, but the ambition of the teams and the ownership on this league, it wouldn’t shock me if one day they obtain end to that.
“You’re by no means going to change everyone’s ideas, but I’ll defend against it.”
Russell was himself accused of taking the easy chance when, after leaving Derby County as a free agent, he signed with Carrying KC. His defence to those claims is elegant compelling – nobody retires to Missouri.

“Even once I advised Derby at the time about my determination, there have been quotes that made it sound that I was going for an easy lifestyles, going to stay in America for the approach to life,” he says.
“No disrespect: if I was attracted to that, I’d have long gone to the opposite golf equipment that were enthusiastic over coming to Kansas City. I wanted to dash and originate something varied. And I wanted to make obvious it was a team that would swimsuit me.
“I’d watched the league for years, especially after our games; you’d be up late anyway and the [MLS] games were on, so I’d sit and watch them thru the night.
“Leading into the Christmas window, when my contract was working out in six months, I knew there was real pastime [from MLS]. There were a few varied golf equipment that were enthusiastic. Kansas set aside a ‘discovery tag’ on me, which basically gave them dibs on me. If you originate that, you’ve got a certain amount of time to speak and agree on something otherwise you approach off it – I’m peaceful now not obvious the way it really works!
“After I spoke with Peter Vermes, the manager, I watched a lot of footage and the way they played at the time was very similar to the way we [at Derby] played below Steve McClaren, which is after we were at our very most productive, that year we got to the play-off final. My position may perhaps be very similar to the way it was in that team.
“Every part match. I was taking a gawk for something varied, a varied challenge. When I left Scotland, my design was by no means to dash to England. My design was to break the mildew of ‘younger Scottish guy does nicely, goes to England’. I wanted to dash abroad, learn a unusual language, a varied tradition. I always wanted to attempt something varied and throw myself into it. I made the determination and I by no means regarded back.”
Part of Russell’s swift adaptation to lifestyles within the US and, in particular, in Kansas City, can be attributed to his long-held savor of all issues Americana. A muscle car enthusiast, his first major purchase upon landing within the States was a little-edition Chevrolet Camaro.
He was already an avid NFL fan, too, having regularly attended gridiron games in London with his Derby teammates. His pass to MLS suitable happened to place him within the metropolis that would soon lend a hand as the epicentre of the NFL. He purchased season tickets for the Kansas City Chiefs and has since considered three Monumental Bowl triumphs alongside the upward thrust of quarter-back Patrick Mahomes, who’s now a minority proprietor of Carrying Kansas City.
Thru their KC connection, Russell has gotten to know Mahomes and Chiefs star tight halt Travis Kelce (aka Mr Taylor Swift). And earlier this season, he got to play at their iconic dwelling stadium, Arrowhead, for the talk to of Messi and Inter Miami, coming off the bench in a 3-2 loss.
“It was massive,” he says of the match attended by a myth-environment 72,000 fans. “I was suitable coming back from a hamstring harm at the time. I didn’t train remarkable the week before. My daughter was born on the Wednesday, so I elegant remarkable uncared for every thing but the last day or two of training before the game.
“Fortunately, I managed to obtain myself on the bench. The entire occasion – being a Chiefs fan and getting to play in Arrowhead against, for me, the absolute best player who’s ever played the game. And my teammate Andreu Fontas, one among my end pals, played with Messi in Barcelona. He got me his jersey after the game.”
Lawful as Kansas City has been the absolute absolute best match for Russell, the past eight seasons have confirmed unequivocally that the former Dundee United man has been the absolute best match for the membership. In his first Stateside season, the 14-cap Scottish winger scored 10 league goals from 30 appearances, the second-best likely return of his career. He has been named the team’s MVP twice – along side once following a stellar campaign in 2020 that saw him rating 15 MLS goals – and Offensive MVP three occasions, whereas also leading the Wizards to prime situation within the Western Conference on two occasions.
And later this month, Russell will have the alternative to land the first silverware of his career, as Carrying face Los Angeles FC within the US Launch Cup final.
But whereas fellow Scots Lewis Morgan and Ryan Gauld have lately earned Scotland recalls for their performances in MLS, Russell, who has now not represented the Tartan Army since 2019, doesn’t request international recognition. The 34-year-veteran instead has his focal point trained firmly on MLS matters.
“I’m realistic about my situation,” Russell says. “I’ve now not been within the squad for a few years now. Clearly, I’d be ecstatic to obtain back in and I’d by no means turn down the alternative. But I haven’t been in it for a whereas. I had a really fair year two seasons ago and I didn’t obtain back within the squad. So I do know where I am. That’s now not really an ambition.
“We have to obtain ourselves back within the play-off hunt over right here and we’ve got a cup final to gawk forward to as nicely. Expectantly there’s going to be a trophy at the halt of the season for me and my team. That’s the ambition. And I’d treasure to elongate my stay right here, as nicely. I’m within the last year of my contract. I’m hoping to elongate that for another two or three years.
“I’m now not getting any youthful. There’s less time than I’d treasure. That is my nineteenth season. I do know there are now not too many of those left, so I’m suitable looking for to revel in every day. I’m the captain of my team and we’ve got the chance to gather a trophy. That’s the goal.”
If Russell will get his wish, MLS will probably be his retirement league. And after six years – and counting – of toiling up and down the cruise at Teenagers’s Mercy Park, no-one can accuse him of taking an easy payday.
