CHAPEL HILL, NC – NC Courage midfielder Brianna Pinto is usually on the other side of coaching, but today, she’s running drills.
“I think it’s really fun to learn different sports,” Pinto said. “I’ve never played field hockey, so I’m learning from all the girls here having fun.”
Although he is more familiar with the soccer ball, this does not stop Pinto from cheering on these young athletes.
This is part of a soccer and field hockey clinic for various youths managed by the Pinto Futbol Foundation and Beyond our Game.
These are two games that Pinto says are not always available.
“Both of these are pay-to-play models, which makes them very expensive for many families,” Pinto said. “We put on a free event so we can make sure they have a chance to be interested. We will even provide some scholarships so they can continue playing.
Pinto, who had a successful career at UNC, says it’s important for these young athletes to see people from similar backgrounds.
“That’s a picture of me after I scored one of my goals, and Courtnie is there,” Pinto said pointing to the video board above. “We hope to serve as role models and be an element of representation for all women here.”
Courtnie Williamson, former UNC field hockey athlete and the founder of Beyond Our Game, is making her own history at UNC.
Williamson is the first Black captain in the history of the field hockey program, and hopes that he will serve as an inspiration to the next generation.
“When you see someone like you, you want to get out there,” Williamson said. “They make you feel as important and valued, and do whatever they do.”
By hosting this clinic, Williamson said they are building a community.
“They’re included, they’re welcome, they can do whatever they want to do,” Williamson said. “Welcoming them to a campus like this, a facility like this, is just amazing. Maybe it will inspire people to want to play in college.”
For any young athletes who are hesitant to try a new sport, Pinto shared a message.
“Have fun, work hard and as long as you stick with it and you are determined and ready to sacrifice for your dream, anything is possible,” said Pinto.
