Legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck has died at the age of 78, according to his representatives.
The musician became a household name thanks to the Yardbirds, before he fronted the Jeff Beck Group.
A statement from Beck’s representative states: “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing.
“After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday.
“His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”
Beck had recently finished a collaborative album with Johnny Depp, titled 18, which featured covers of some music icons, including Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Killing Joke and The Velvet Underground, according to Rolling Stone.
Over the course of his career, he received seven Grammy Award for instrumental performances.
He also copped an eighth Grammy for his involvement on Herbie Hancock’s The Imagine Project.
Variety has called Beck one of ‘the most innovative and certainly the most unpredictable of ’60s guitar heroes’.
