ALBUQUERQUE, NM – 41-year-old Mark Peter led police on a chase that led to the crowded El Mezquite Market on 98th St. in northwest Albuquerque.
In June, Peter was found in a car passed out parked at the AutoZone across from the market. Here in the video it can be seen that the police gave Peter several chances to get out peacefully. Instead, he drove his car.
The lapel video shows APD officers using stop sticks to puncture Peter’s tires. A few minutes later, the video showed officers chasing him to El Mezquite Market.
APD said two officers tried to arrest Peter, but Peter pulled out a gun and shot them. That’s when the officers started shooting at Peter as he retaliated.
The store’s surveillance video shows an eye view of what’s going on, and how fast things are.
Several people were in the checkout line when Peter ran inside.
APD says the officers involved made sure to fan out in a roughly U-shape. This is to ensure that no innocent people are affected.
APD Chief Harold Medina says as a result, no one else was injured at the market.
“The officers had to make quick decisions, and it was very disturbing the number of individuals involved, and the fact that they considered citizens who were in the subject location armed and fired,” Medina said.
APD said Peter was under the influence, but is still investigating what substance was in his system at the time.
This is the second time that Peter has been involved in an incident like this.
According to APD, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department responded to a similar call of Peter passed out in his car. That was in April, and he was arrested without incident.
Peter later died of his injuries from the shooting at El Mezquite.
The four APD officers involved have not yet returned to full duty.
