An Ecuadorian woman who was previously discovered alive in a coffin in her own wake has now died.
Bella Montoya, 76, died on Friday afternoon after a week of being hospitalized in critical care in the coastal town of Babahoyo, according to Gilbert Barberán, the woman’s son.
Montoya was quickly taken to the Martin Icaza General Hospital when he was found alive after hitting his own coffin in Babahoyo’s wake.
“During his stay in the hospital, he received comprehensive medical care and periodic check-ups by hospital specialists. Also, individual medical audits were conducted for this case,” said of the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador in a statement.
Montoya first entered the hospital due to a stroke and was pronounced dead at the time.
Barberán told CNN that he had to register his mother’s death in the civil registry a second time.
Montoya’s daughter, Zeneida Leal, said her mother’s condition was worsening.
“The doctor said that my mom was sick, that she was very dangerous, that she was suffering from kidney failure, that she could not be saved because everything became complicated and she went into respiratory arrest,” Leal told CNN.
The Ministry of Public Health said an investigation was underway into the events that led to his presumed death.
