Police say one person was shot and killed at a small college in Oklahoma and that a suspect is in custody after school officials told students to stay in the area.
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — A man shot and killed another man Monday at Rose State College in Oklahoma, according to police, who reported no other injuries after the campus was placed on lockdown.
Midwest City Police Chief Sid Porter said the men “got to know each other through a domestic situation,” but did not elaborate on what exactly their relationship was or what led to the shooting. He also did not say whether the man was a student or staff member at the school.
The campus has about 13,000 students and is just outside of Oklahoma City.
The video shows crime scene tape around the humanities building in the center of Rose State College and several law enforcement agencies on campus.
Porter said the victim was shot once and the suspect was confronted by officers working on campus.
“They ordered him to drop the gun, which he did, and they took him into custody,” Porter said.
Rose State College canceled classes for the rest of Monday after the lockdown order was lifted. A person who answered the phone at the public safety office Monday referred questions to police.
Porter said weeks before the shooting, students and staff at Rose State College completed an exercise on what to do in the event of an active shooter.
“Things got locked in pretty quickly,” Porter said. “I just thought they did a good job of listening to the school and everyone stayed put and didn’t panic because we didn’t know what was going on.”
