People reacted to the SNP leader’s announcement that Scotland would remove the monarch.
SNP leadership leader Humza Yousaf said Scotland could get rid of the monarchy within five years of leaving the UK.
Yousaf said he wanted the country to quickly consider whether it would replace the King with an elected head of state, should it become independent.
His comments were criticized by thousands of royal fans online.
“Looking at the support of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh yesterday I’d say the SNP have lost the plot if they want to get rid of the monarchy,” said one user.
User Allexmarie Holland wrote, “The monarchy will continue and survive with or without Scotland’s support. But it’s sad because Scotland is part of our United Kingdom. It’s a shame the SNP chose to create division and hatred.”
TV presenter Piers Morgan also criticized the SNP leader’s comments.
Morgan said, “Monarchy keeps our sense of country and patriotism separate from politics.”
He added, “It gives us a reason to unite and love our country, its traditions and its identity beyond the thread of daily debate.”
